Birmingham City football club has announced that they will start the 2016/17 season with not one but two new kit sponsors. The announcement came at a press event held especially at Resorts World in the city centre.
For many this was the first time they had seen the new kit. The event saw a unique blend of business, community leaders and supporters of the club gather for the unveiling. All that attended were suitably impressed as it was unveiled that Adidas would be the new kit maker and 888Sport the official sponsor.
The team last wore Adidas over 30-years ago and for those old enough to remember, it was a welcome return for the German brand. The inclusion of 888Sport as the main sponsor saw them displace last seasons out of favour brand EZE Group. There were mumblings leading up to the unveiling that the team would be going with a same day loans sponsor similar to that of newly relegated Newcastle Utd. This rumour was, however, quickly quashed as Blues Director, Panos Pavlakis took to the stage to announce the news.
Speaking to the packed room, Mr Pavlakis praised the brand for the deal that had been made and the reconnection between the club and brand after more than 30-years.
“It’s proof that we have a very good project going on here, we are an attractive team, if big companies such as Adidas can see the value and come on board.”
Fans hope for improvement on 2016 season mid-table finish
There are high hopes for Birmingham City football club this season after what was considered an uneventful season in 2015/16. With some hoping they can emulate the success they achieved in the 2008/09 season by being promoted to the Premiership in 2017.
Speaking of the history of the club, Mr Pavlankis added that he was proud to have Adidas onboard and that it echoed childhood memories he had of players like Trevor Francis and Alberto Tarantini wearing the Adidas blue shirt.
It is hoped that the sponsorship will bring in some much needed money for players in the approaching season. The owners of the club have done brisk business up until now, with just the signing of Ryan Shotton from Derby taking place. Fans and supporters will be hoping for some added fire-power to get the team the goals they need in order to secure promotion this season. At the time of writing there were more Birmingham City players going out the door on loan than coming into the team. It is however early days and the team have plenty of time before the new season kicks-off.
It’s expected by fans that alongside new kit sponsors the team will also bring in some new talent to bolster what transpired to be only a mid-table squad last season. For many a repeat of last season will be a huge disappointment , but they know the only way to improve is to make signings that will increase the amount of goals scored from last year.
